To lay astro turf (artificial grass), excavate 2 to 4 inches of the existing soil, lay a compacted crushed rock or gravel base, and secure the trimmed turf with nails and silica sand infill.
For complete instructions, you can follow the Lowe's Artificial Turf Guide.
Remove all existing grass, roots, and topsoil to a depth of about 2 to 4 inches using a shovel or sod cutter. Grade and slope the sub-base slightly away from structures to ensure proper water drainage. Spray a weed killer on the exposed soil to prevent future growth.
Lay down a porous weed barrier fabric across the dug-out area. Spread 2 to 3 inches of crushed stone aggregate, paver base, or decomposed granite over the barrier. Wet the aggregate lightly with water and compact it firmly using a plate compactor or hand tamper until solid.
Unroll the artificial turf and let it sit in the sun for a few hours so the backing relaxes and flattens out. Face the grass grain/blades in the same direction—ideally angled toward your main viewing area or house for the most natural look. Trim the edges carefully using a sharp utility knife, leaving a slight excess to tuck or cut precisely against borders.
If joining multiple pieces, fold back the edges, lay out seaming tape, apply turf adhesive, and press the edges firmly together without trapping blades. Fasten the perimeter of the turf using 5-inch galvanized landscape nails or U-shaped pegs spaced every 6 to 12 inches. Use a carpet kicker if needed to stretch the material and eliminate wrinkles before final nailing.
Spread an even layer of silica sand or kiln-dried infill across the turf (about 2 to 5 kilos per square meter) using a drop spreader or hand technique. Brush the sand down into the turf fibers with a stiff-bristled push broom to weigh the grass down and help the blades stand upright.
