Who ranks for “automated storage and retrieval systems”

An Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) is a computer-controlled technology that automatically places and removes inventory from designated storage locations.

How ASRS Works

Software coordinates with a Warehouse Management System (WMS) to track inventory. Robots, cranes, or shuttles travel directly to the item instead of human workers walking aisles. Goods are delivered straight to an operator at a workstation, known as a goods-to-person approach.

Main Types of ASRS

Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs): Enclosed columns with trays and a central extractor that brings items to waist height. Carousels: Rotating shelves or bins (vertical or horizontal) that spin to present items to the user. Unit-Load Systems: Large crane-based structures designed to handle heavy pallet loads. Mini-Load & Micro-Load Systems: Shuttle or crane setups for lighter loads, totes, cartons, and small parts.

Benefits and Disadvantages

Pros: Maximizes vertical space, improves picking accuracy, reduces labor costs, and enhances worker safety. Cons: High upfront capital investment, complex integration, and reliance on ongoing technical maintenance.
