A direct reduced iron plant removes oxygen from iron ore in a solid state to produce metallic sponge iron without melting it.
Feeding Material: Iron ore pellets or lumps enter the top of a reduction furnace or rotary kiln. Reducing Gases: Hot gases—typically carbon monoxide and hydrogen derived from natural gas or green hydrogen—flow up through the ore. Chemical Reaction: The gas strips oxygen from the iron oxides at temperatures around 700 °C to 1,050 °C, turning the ore into porous sponge iron (DRI). Steelmaking: The finished DRI is then moved, often hot-charged, directly into an electric arc furnace (EAF) to make high-quality steel.
Lower Emissions: Produces significantly less carbon dioxide than traditional coal-based blast furnaces. Fuel Flexibility: Modern systems like Midrex Technologies can transition from natural gas to running on 100% hydrogen. Operational Agility: Can be started up and shut down much faster than conventional blast furnaces.
