Foundational Theory & History

Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Cornelius Agrippa: An extremely influential 16th-century encyclopedia on magical theory that laid the groundwork for Western magic. The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall: A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated survey of worldwide esoteric philosophy, symbolism, and myth. The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca by John Michael Greer: A modern, accessible overview exploring 100 key historical figures, events, and traditions across two millennia.

Magic, Rituals & Grimoires

The Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton) translated by S.L. MacGregor Mathers: A classic anonymous grimoire focusing on ceremonial magic and demonology. Magick in Theory and Practice (Book 4) by Aleister Crowley: A foundational text for Thelema and modern ritual magic systems. The Modern Witchcraft Book of Natural Magick by Judy Ann Nock: A practical, nature-focused guide covering herbal charms, crystals, and earth-based rituals.

Users on platforms like Quora generally agree that starting with theoretical and historical surveys prevents confusion before diving into complex practical grimoires.
