Who ranks for “ultraviolet water treatment”

UV water treatment uses ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of harmful bacteria, viruses, and cysts, rendering them unable to reproduce and making the water safe to drink.

How It Works

Water flows through a chamber containing a specialized UV-C lamp (typically at a 254 nm wavelength). The ultraviolet energy penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms and permanently damages their genetic material. It operates without chemicals, meaning it does not alter water taste, odor, or pH balance.

Advantages & Limitations

Pros: Highly effective against 99.9% of biological pathogens (like E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium) without adding chemicals or changing taste. Cons: It does not remove physical sediment, heavy metals, or chemicals on its own, and it provides no residual disinfection once the water leaves the lamp. Pre-filtration requirement: Water must pass through sediment and carbon filters first so dirt or cloudiness do not block or scatter the UV light.

Maintenance & Cost

Bulb replacement: The UV lamp loses intensity over time and must be replaced once a year. Quartz sleeve cleaning: The protective glass tube around the bulb should be cleaned or replaced annually to prevent scale buildup. System cost: Whole-house units typically range from $170 for basic setups to over $1,000 for high-flow multi-stage systems. For guidance, you can check specialized providers like ESP Water Products or system details from brands like Aquasure USA.
