Through the eyes of Frankie, a nurse who faces graphic and gruesome scenes on the battlefield, we see not only the horrors of war but also the challenges of returning home to a society that refuses to acknowledge women’s service in Vietnam.

Here are the key elements that make this book a must-read:

Soundtrack: Music plays an important part in the story, it creates a sense of place and mood. It becomes a character of its own. I was thrilled to find a number of playlists on Spotify featuring the songs mentioned in the book.

I read “Another Life”, one of this author’s earlier books, last year, and now I fully understand why a number of reviews stated that it was different from her more well-known, recent works. “The Women” is one of my favourite books of the year to date. “The Nightingale” and “The Great Alone,” are now firmly on my to-be-read list.

In summary, “The Women” deserves all the stars. It’s a beautifully tragic and mesmerising tribute to the women who served, leaving an undeniable mark on history.

Setting: The quaint English town provides an ideal backdrop for secrets, intrigue, and hidden treasures.
Dual Timelines: The interplay between past and present mysteries keeps readers engaged.
Arthur’s Wisdom: Arthur’s nuggets of wisdom at the start of each chapter lend a delightful touch.
Cosy Atmosphere: Picture yourself curled up with this book on a wintry day, sipping tea under a warm blanket
While brimming with potential, the book could benefit from additional editing and polishing. The ending tantalisingly hints at future sequels, leaving readers eager for more Freya and Aunt Carole adventures.

Overall, it’s an amazing book with exceptional writing, and it definitely left me counting down the days until Book 3.

It took me a few attempts to get into the book, and then it took off like a rollercoaster. Satire, fantasy, and philosophy all wrapped into the same pages with language like I have never read before. It combines satire, fantasy, and philosophy within the same pages, featuring a unique style of language that I've never encountered before. Every sentence is meticulously crafted with hidden meanings, making it a pleasure to read not only for the story but also for its writing style. The book is occasionally chaotic, and you may need to reread a few chapters to fully grasp what is happening. After learning about the book's purpose—exposing the hypocrisy, corruption, and spiritual emptiness of Soviet life—I decided to pick up "Heart of a Dog." It was darkly comical and philosophical, an easier read but just as enjoyable.

“Soms verwens sy hierdie ding in haar wat moet weet.” (p.326) Hierdie paar woorde sê baie oor ondersoekende misdaadjoernalis, Ami Prinsloo. Sy is onverskrokke, hardkoppig, hou op ’n aweregse manier altyd so na as moontlik aan die waarheid. En sy laat ’n ding nie los nie, nie eers wanneer sy bedreig word of onmin op die hals haal nie.
Wanneer haar goeie vriend, afgetrede polisiegeneraal, Paul de Jager, sterf aan ’n koeëlwond, word Ami belas met sy laaste wens, naamlik om ‘n ou saak weer te besoek, dié van ’n vyftienjarige seun wat in 1998 spoorloos verdwyn het. Paul was drie maal getroud, vandaar drie weduwees wat almal ’n rol speel in die ondersoek waarby Ami al hoe dieper betrokke raak.
Die interessante storielyn wat vinnig beweeg, het my vasgenael gehou. Ek het ook baie gehou van die manier waarop die skrywer die gebeure in 1998 aangebied het, en wel vanuit die gesigspunt van verskeie rolspelers wat betrokke was.
Die drie weduwees is die vierde boek in die reeks oor Ami Prinsloo. Dit volg op Minder as niks, Die verkeerde vrou en Al wat tel. Ek het al bes gegee met reekse, kan eenvoudig nie al die vorige detail onthou nie, maar nogtans kon ek hierdie een met gemak lees en waardeer. Wat weereens bewys watter uitmuntende krimiskrywer, Irma Venter is.
Die drie weduwees is uitgegee deur Tafelberg, ‘n druknaam van NB uitgewers, nou onder die vaandel van Jonathan Ball Uitgewers.

**Really good book!!!**

It's absurdly witty and adventurous with a touch of dark humour throughout. Really enjoy both the modern and historical settings of the book. Good for someone re-entering the reading world after a while (like myself), and I recommend for those who enjoy comedic or hist fic books.
