Angular unconformity between Late Oligocene red beds of the Khulys Formation (bottom) and Miocene red beds of the Burkhan Formation toped by the Harrat Late Miocene Basalt at the Usfan Pass in Saudi Arabia. Deposition, uplifting, erosion, deposition and finally lava flow are all related to the intensity of rifting and opening of the Red Sea for the last 30 million years of geological evolution of western Saudi Arabia

The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) was founded in 1961. With 63 active national members, IUGS is one of the World’s largest scientific organizations. It encourages international co-operation and participation in the Earth sciences in relation to human welfare and is a member of the International Science Council (ISC). Membership is open to all countries or defined regions.​​
