## Our Focus Is Immunology

We believe that no other biomedical discipline has greater implications for human health than immunology. By unraveling the complexities of the immune system, LJI researchers are directly tackling an extraordinarily diverse array of diseases, such as asthma, cancer, CoVID-19, type 1 diabetes, Parkinson’s, and many others.

At La Jolla Institute for Immunology, every day, our discoveries move the world closer to *Life Without Disease.*

## Our Research Centers

La Jolla Institute is home to four research centers that focus the efforts of collaborative groups of researchers on defined areas of inquiry, to accelerate progress toward the development of new treatments and vaccines to prevent and cure autoimmune conditions, cancer and infectious disease.

## Center for Autoimmunity and Inflammation

Enabling our experts to take a deep dive into the complexity of the immune system.

## Center for Cancer Immunotherapy

At the forefront of exploring new and sometimes unexpected avenues for novel immune-based cancer treatments.

Learn More

## Center for Vaccine Innovation

Conducting fundamental research on how the body reacts to vaccines and battles infections.

Watch LJI's Recent Live from the Lab

On October 1, 2025, LJI hosted the latest installment of Live from the Lab, moderated by Sonia Sharma, Ph.D., Director of LJI’s Center for Sex-based Differences in the Immune System. The program featured the 2025 Tullie and Rickey Families SPARK Awards for Innovations in Immunology recipients, Amparo Martínez Pérez, Ph.D., and Laura Hinojosa. The discussion focused on how sex-based differences shape the way our immune systems respond to health challenges—an area of research that has too often been overlooked.

Center for Sex-based Differences in the Immune System

Disease affects men and women differently, and sex-specific health differences can be glaring. Women are better at fighting off infection but are more likely to develop an autoimmune condition, with 80 percent of autoimmune disease cases diagnosed in females. Men are more prone to heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. Some of these cases may come down to genetic differences that are the result of differential x-chromosome inactivation; sex hormone level; gender; behavior, or life experiences. But that is only part of the explanation.

Art, science, stories

After reading about LJI’s research efforts to fight COVID-19, Juan de Dios Sánchez, an internationally recognized artist from Cuernavaca, Mexico, gifted a 3ft sculpture titled “COVID-19” to the Institute. It is dedicated to the researchers who tirelessly worked to put the pandemic behind us.
