# Unisa bags notable awards for research prowess

Sustaining high-level performance in research, Unisa has won two prestigious awards from the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association, in the Organisational Excellence in Research Management, and Early Career Excellence in Research Management categories.

# The spirit of Sangweni hailed as the epitome of excellence

Delivering the keynote address at the first Prof Stan Sangweni Memorial Lecture, Unisa’s Chancellor and former President Dr Thabo Mbeki, hailed Sangweni as a priceless gem that advocated for and epitomised honesty in serving the South African people.

# Pursuit of self-interest versus the Pan-African agenda

"The growing trend of the pursuit of national self-interests does not underpin the tenets of Pan-Africanism," said Unisa’s Chancellor and Former President, Dr Thabo Mbeki, at the recently held TM-School’s biannual dialogue.

# OR Tambo remembered as a radical democracy builder

Delivering the keynote address at the 5th OR Tambo Memorial Lecture, Dr Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh lauded Tambo as a radical critic of the apartheid regime while also building the nation.

# Reflective PVC Summit intensifies Unisa as a site of excellence

On 3 September 2025, Unisa held the Principal and Vice-Chancellor's Summit, aimed at reinforcing the university's collective commitment to addressing critical academic, research and engaged scholarship priorities.

# Unisa scholar bags an extraordinary NRF rating

A first for Unisa, Dr Gwenneth Miller received a C2 NRF rating through the creative output route – a pathway made possible when the Department of Higher Education and Training began awarding accredited, subsidy-bearing units to universities for their creative outputs.

# Unisa and ATUPA recognise researchers for ingenuity and innovation

The university, in partnership with the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa and the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority, recently celebrated distinguished scholars whose research and leadership have significantly impacted Africa’s knowledge and innovation arena.

# Reassessing factors that exacerbate gender inequality

"The struggle for gender equality is far from over" - a common thread made during a panel discussion at the recent Unisa's Catalytic Niche Area Research Symposium that centred on the partnerships required to achieve gender equality.

# Remarkable scholar receives international recognition for impactful research

Dr Nonkanyiso Pamella Shabalala's article on global citizenship has earned an extraordinary recognition by an international publisher, positioning her as a leading voice for the Global South.

# Celebrating women leaders in research management

In celebration of #WomensMonth2025, we are putting a spotlight on two women leaders, Dr Retha Visagie and Dr Cebisa Nkhumeleni, who ensure that Unisa’s Directorate of Research Support provides quality services in an efficient, professional and courteous manner to the university’s researchers and postgraduate students.
