# Science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone

The purification system, built with the help of the Instituto de Montaña, channels red river water into canals and pools stocked with ancestral plants that remove the heavy metals and successfully return the water to an acceptable pH level.

This aerial picture is of the former village of Geamăna in the Lupșa area in Transylvania, Romania. The Romanian photographer Alexandru Radu Poposecu created this image to highlight the beauty of the lake, known as the “Geamăna environmental disaster”, which is at odds with its toxicity. The lake continues to grow by about 100 cm a year and affects the quality of the local groundwater.
